US Open 2023 Semi Finals – Preview
08-09 Sept 2023 | USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, New York
The local crowd are hoping and praying that they get their wish of an All-American final at this year’s US Open.
Coco Gauff and Madison Keys are aiming to safely negotiate their respective semi-finals to set up the first all-American US Open final for the first time since Keys lost the 2017 title to Sloane Stephens.
But it certainly won’t be plain sailing, and sadly for the US public we can’t see this clash coming to fruition.
Meanwhile in the men’s draw a repeat of the Wimbledon final looks on the cards, as the two tennis powerhouses Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic are expected to meet in the final major of the year.
US Open 2023 Semi Finals – Women’s: Coco Gauff vs Karolina Muchova
08 Sept 2023
Coco Gauff faces Karolina Muchova as the two players who have both lost Grand Slam finals before seeking another shot at Major glory.
Gauff can call on the experience of a straight sets win over Muchova at Cincinnati not too long ago with that win coming in the final and giving the American her first WTA 1000 title.
Muchova remains a young player with a bright future even if Gauff is younger and causing much bigger waves, and she should not be written off in this scenario.
Both players blitzed their last eight opponents in quick time, and they will be fresh and raring to go.
Gauff has had the tougher run to the last four but that might end up working in her favour as she has already had a few ‘deep breath’ moments.
US Open 2023 Semi Finals – Women’s: Madison Keys vs Aryna Sabalenka
08 Sept 2023
Aryna Sabalenka appears to be on an inevitable march to the title which only her own faltering can derail.
Madison Keys has put in a brilliant effort across the fortnight, but Sabalenka is yet to drop a set in New York and looks the most likely champion.
Sabalenka steamrolled over Keys at Wimbledon earlier this year in what was then her second win over the American.
With the Australian Open in the bag, Sabalenka is out to complete the hard court Grand Slam double; a feat not achieved since Monica Seles did it way back in 1992.
US Open 2023 Semi Finals – Men’s: Ben Shelton vs Novak Djokovic
08 Sept 2023
Ben Shelton is out to become the first American man to reach the US Open final since Andy Roddick lost the 2006 championship match to Roger Federer.
Novak Djokovic is chasing another stack of milestones and a fourth US Open title having already secured a return to the top of the rankings.
The winners of the semi-finals also guarantee themselves $1.5 million in prize money and a monster rankings points bump.
Shelton will rise to a new career-high thanks to his run to the last four as he is on track to break into the top 20.
However, in his first meeting with Djokovic his chances of going on to the final appear slim at best.
US Open 2023 Semi Finals – Men’s: Carlos Alcaraz vs Daniil Medvedev
09 Sept 2023
Carlos Alcaraz is desperate for another date with Djokovic but will need to get beyond a former champion to make that happen.
This semi-final features the last two winners of the US Open with defending champion Alcaraz meeting 2021 winner Daniil Medvedev.
Both men won their last eight meetings against stern opposition in straight sets suggesting this could be a much tighter contest.
This has the look of a match that could go really long given how good both players are at playing defence.
Alcaraz leads the head-to-head between the two men having won twice in three meetings with Medvedev.
