Newcastle vs PSG – Verdict

St James’ Park has waited a long time for this night. After a 0-0 draw in Milan on matchday one, Newcastle will face PSG on Wednesday.

It’s nice to see a fresh face in the Champions League but they could have hardly been handed a tougher task for their first home match.

Despite their previous struggles in Europe, It feels like something has finally clicked in Paris.

Master tactician and man manager Luis Enrique is guiding one of the world’s most promising young squads, headlined by the lethal Mbappe.

Moulding so many new players together comes with its challenges so it’s no surprise that the French side have had a tough start to the season.

They’ve dropped nine points in seven matches this season and have struggled to live up to their xG, but they have shown real defensive qualities in recent weeks.

Newcastle have found their feet since suffering three consecutive defeats to Man City, Liverpool and Brighton in the Premier League. That would be a difficult run of fixtures for any team in the world, including PSG, but Eddie Howe’s men have rebounded with five clean sheets and four wins.

The most satisfying of those results was the 0-0 draw at the San Siro, which confirms that Newcastle United can compete at this level.

The way in which Newcastle limited Man City to a combined xG of 1.56 across two matches, when their 90-minute average is 2.3, shows they’re a tough nut to crack.

If the hosts can win their individual battles – particularly Kieran Trippier against Mbappe and Bruno Guimaraes against Ugarte – then a point is a possibility.
