Newcastle vs Liverpool 27/08/2023 – Verdict

Newcastle United will be eager to make a statement when they play host to Liverpool at St James’ Park this weekend.

The Magpies started their Premier League season with a bang, beating Aston Villa 5-1. However, they were unable to replicate that performance when losing 1-0 to Manchester City.

It is not a disgrace to lose to the Champions. Eddie Howe’s men are not yet at that level, but they will be confident of matching Liverpool on their own patch.

The Reds are unbeaten in 13 meetings which is quite impressive when you consider how tough a plus St James’ Park is to play at.

Last season’s disastrous loss, in which they were 2-0 down after 17 minutes and goalkeeper Nick Pope was sent off, highlights their misfortune against the Reds.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have looked wide open at the back in the absence of a defensive midfielder but took a credible point at Chelsea before beating Bournemouth 3-1.

It was notable how easy it was to create goalscoring opportunities with 23 shots allowed on goal across the two games.

Alexis Mac Allister, for all his admirable qualities, is not a defensive midfielder. Wataru Endo at 30 years of age for a price of €20 million feels like a stopgap until they find a solution.

The hosts will need to guard against the threat of Salah, Jota, Diaz and perhaps Darwin Nunez on the counter, but they should be able to create plenty of chances if they build a head of steam.

Joelinton could help them get in between the lines and unlock Liverpool in the final third, so his involvement could be crucial, while Sandro Tonali can help them recycle possession.

Times are changing and with Champions League qualification now an expectation more than a hope, it’s important to take as many points as possible from home games, including this one.

We think the hosts will make a lightning-fast start and put the visitors on the back foot early. If they can guard against the counter then they should break their Liverpool hoodoo.
