Newcastle United will be looking to strengthen their position at the top of the Champions League’s group of death when Dortmund travel to St James’ Park on Wednesday night.
Newcastle vs Dortmund Preview:
Eddie Howe’s side come int the Champions League clash on Tyneside in confident mood after thrashing Paris St Germain 4-1 in their last European match.
Last season’s Bundesliga runners-up, Dortmund have made it to the knockout stage of the Champions League in eight of their 10 most recent campaigns, but went out to Chelsea in the round of 16 last season.
Their record in England, however, does not augur well with seven of their last eight visits having ended in defeat – both the Blues and Manchester City got the better of them last season.
Dortmund have collected just a single point from their two Group F outings to date, but are yet to find the back of the net following a 2-0 defeat at Paris St Germain and a 0-0 home draw with AC Milan.
However, the defeat in Paris remains the only one they have suffered in 11 games in all competitions and they have won their last five league games.
After securing a draw away against AC Milan and an emphatic home win over PSG, the Magpies will now be looking to squeeze more points out of a goal-shy Dortmund side.
The German outfit have had more shots than Newcastle in the competition, yet they still haven’t put the ball in the back of the net.
The same story is beginning to develop in the Bundesliga.
Dortmund are fourth but have scored nine fewer goals than Bayern and eight less than the top two of Stuttgart and Leverkusen.
Newcastle will be without the injured Harvey Barnes for Wednesday’s encounter. Lewis Miley could also miss out through illness. Sven Botman and Joe Willock are both doubts.
Borussia Dortmund, on the other hand, won’t be able to count on Julien Duranville and Youssoufa Moukoko. Thomas Meunier and Mateu Morey are also inactive.
We’re backing the hosts to out-score and out-power Dortmund at St James’ Park.
Newcastle will feed off their rowdy home atmosphere and score at least two goals. The Magpies to open the scoring is also an enticing bet.
Prediction:
- Newcastle to score at least two goals
- Newcastle to score first
