Man City vs Sevilla 16/08/2023 – Team news
Pep Guardiola will be without several key players ahead of the trip to Athens. Kevin de Bruyne is out with a hamstring issue while John Stones and Ruben Dias are also set to miss out.
Sevilla are expected to start with Yassine Bounou despite the rumour mill suggesting Real Madrid are considering him as a replacement for the injured Thibaut Courtois.
Youssef En-Nesyri scored in the season opener against Valencia and should be joined by Suso, Erik Lamela and Lucas Ocampos in a four-man attack.
Man City vs Sevilla betting preview
Manchester City enjoyed a historic season last year as they became just the second team in Premier League history to claim a Champions League, FA Cup and league treble.
Thanks to their continental success, Pep Guardiola’s men will now be making their first appearance in the UEFA Super Cup, hoping to pave the way for a potential quadruple winning season.
Sevilla won’t be easily pushed over in this fixture considering they have plenty of experience. Since 2006, the Spanish outfit has made six appearances in the UEFA Super Cup.
The masters of the Europa League beat Barcelona 3-0 that year but have since lost five straight in the competition.
Interestingly, none of those six matches have come against an English outfit, with Sevilla losing to Spanish opposition on three occasions, AC Milan and Bayern Munich.
Pep Guardiola has cast doubt on his team’s ability to compete on all fronts and fight for another treble, saying it will be nearly impossible to compete at such a high level for another season.
Whether that is a statement designed to take some pressure off of his team early in the season is yet to be seen, though there’s little doubt they’ll see this as a very winnable trophy.
For all their European successes, Sevilla struggled in La Liga last season and are as short as 5/1 to be in a relegation battle this term after kicking off with a 2-1 loss at home to Valencia.
They were beaten 4-0 and 3-1 by Manchester City in Champions League group stage meetings last season, although their form has picked up post-World Cup break.
City, on the other hand, looked comfortable when beating Burnley 3-0 last week and played well in the Community Shield, even if they did fall short on penalties.
The Sky Blues have beaten Sevilla in all six of their previous meetings and last year’s demolition of Real Madrid in the Champions League shows they’re a cut above Spanish teams at present.
Without De Bruyne or Gundogan, City may be lacking in deeper lying creativity, but the partnership being formed by Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland should mean the prolific Norwegian still receives plenty of service.
While we anticipate a victory for the English side, Sevilla have much more quality than Burnley and should find a way to score given the absence of Dias and Stones.
