Liverpool vs Arsenal – Verdict

Liverpool managed to grind out a goalless draw away from home at Chelsea in midweek and they did so without Virgil van Dijk. They were clearly second best on the night, but Chelsea could not get the goal their play deserved and Jurgen Klopp returned north with a point.

He would have been delighted with the clean sheet and his side have tightened up defensively recently, but that has come at a cost. They offered little going forward at Stamford Bridge against a Chelsea side who are struggling for goals.

The Reds did not muster a shot on target, but it’s worth noting they are a different animal at home. They have only lost once at Anfield and have won nine of their 13 games, scoring 34 times.

In fact, only Chelsea have stopped them scoring at home and they have some big wins – 9-0 against Bournemouth and 7-0 against Manchester United.

Manchester City have also been swept aside at Anfield and they have kept three consecutive clean sheets with the latter being that thrashing of United.

There’s no doubt they still need to be respected at home, but Jurgen Klopp will be a lot more worried about containing Arsenal than Mikel Arteta will be of the hosts.

The Gunners have failed to score just once away from home, in the recent 1-0 defeat at Everton. Bukayo Saka is likely to return to Anfield and Arteta is spoilt for choice with attacking options now Gabriel Jesus is back.

Arsenal may well be content to allow Liverpool to dominate possession because they know the hosts are more dangerous in transition. Arsenal also have pace to burn in attack and their midfield will look to dominate Liverpool’s ageing engine room.

Consistency has been key for Arsenal this season and they are on a seven-match winning run in the league, which has seen six of those games go over 2.5 goals.

So plumping for the overs again would seem a straightforward choice, even though the hosts have been better recently at the back.

But Klopp’s men may just throw caution to the wind. Down in eighth place, draws are no good and they might just see this game as a chance to show what they can do.

With that in mind, backing both teams to score looks a good approach and it’s worth going for goals and lots of them at Anfield.
