Leeds United vs Tottenham Hotspur – Sunday, 4:30pm

Leeds United host Tottenham Hotspur at Elland Road on Sunday, with both sides desperately in need of three points, but for different reasons.

Key stats

  • Tottenham beat Leeds 4-3 earlier this season and there have been a combined 21 goals in five meetings since Leeds’ promotion.
  • The last eight meetings between the teams have featured at least three goals.
  • Both teams have scored in Leeds’ last 12 matches. The Whites have averaged 1.5 goals per game and allowed an average of 2.83 during that run.
  • Both teams have scored in Tottenham’s last five away matches. Those matches have averaged five goals per game.

Verdict

You couldn’t ask for a better game to end the Premier League season. What’s more, it’s live on television. Although they find themselves in very different positions, both of these teams usually provide entertainment.

Leeds United are looking Championship bound. They can still save themselves with victory on the final day, but the scenario is complicated as it also involves slip-ups from Everton and Leicester.

Tottenham don’t have their fate in their hands, either. They travel to Elland Road knowing a win may not be enough to clinch the seventh and final European spot in the Premier League table.

Aston Villa can secure themselves Europa League Conference football with a win over Brighton, or even a draw if Spurs don’t take all three points.

If Villa are beaten by Brighton, Spurs need just one point as Ryan Mason’s men have the edge in the goals scored column.

You would assume Tottenham have the firepower to get the win here, but Leeds’ home record is by no means terrible. They’ve lost just six games at Elland Road this season, just one more home loss than the likes of Brighton and Villa.

It remains to be seen who Leeds will start up top. Rodrigo Moreno and Patrick Bamford could miss out due to injury, while there’s a rumour that Georginio Rutter won’t be used because one more appearance triggers a payment to Hoffenheim.

Leeds have spent £36million on a striker yet he may play no part when the Whites desperately need goals to survive, just to save a few pennies. Even Daniel Levy might be proud of that one.

We think this game has the potential to be very Leedsy-Spursy. By that, we mean the sides could take turns playing themselves into a preferable position, only to throw it away with hazardous defending.

This could be a wide-open game with the chance of a Leeds collapse if and when their pending relegation starts to become a reality. We’re betting on a high-scoring game at Elland Road.
