Chelsea vs Liverpool – Verdict

Not much has gone right for either of these two teams this season and Graham Potter saw his tenure ended on Sunday night after Chelsea’s defeat to Aston Villa 24 hours earlier.

The Blues were second best for large parts of the game and Villa were well worth their 2-0 win. Southampton also won at Chelsea in February while Everton earned a 2-2 draw recently and a home win looks unbackable.

Chelsea are 29/20 to grab a success in Bruno Saltor’s first game in charge but only the staunchest of Chelsea fans would be getting involved in that.

The lack of goals has been alarming with just 16 at home and with little to play for in the league it’s hard to see things changing overnight.

Saltor will be after a reaction but with a lack of respect for Potter reportedly running through the Chelsea dressing room, Saltor, who followed Potter to Chelsea from Brighton, is hardly likely to get much more from the squad.

Expect some changes in personnel but the feeling around the Bridge has been poisonous for a while and even the arrival of shambolic travellers Liverpool will not present the hosts with all three points.

The Reds have tightened up massively in defence. Ignoring their humbling at Man City, Liverpool had kept four clean sheets in five, but away from home they have been poor.

Just three wins tells its own story and they average just a goal a game at the other end.

Like Chelsea, Liverpool really are playing for pride. Klopp will not admit it, but a charge for fourth seems almost impossible considering their current form. Just how they approach a trip to the capital remains to be seen, but this one could just peter out into another stalemate.

The last three meetings have ended goalless, while the last five have ended all square, and it’s debatable whether either side has got the desire to go and win this one.

So, hang your hat on the draw and don’t expect a thriller either against two sides wallowing in their own poor form.
