Brighton vs Newcastle 02/09/2023 – Verdict

Brighton will be eager to make up for their disappointing loss to West Ham last weekend, after failing to capitalise on their 4-1 victories over Luton and Wolves.

Brighton have looked dangerous in attack, but they have also looked shaky in defence. West Ham took advantage of their vulnerability on the counterattack and Brighton are yet to keep a clean sheet.

Newcastle started their campaign with a convincing 5-1 victory against Aston Villa before giving a fair account of themselves in a 1-0 loss away to Manchester City.

Anthony Gordon struck in the 25th minute against Liverpool before captain Virgil van Dijk was sent off three minutes later for fouling Alexander Isak when through on goal.

However, Eddie Howe’s men failed to utilise their 60% possession and 25 shots at goal, losing 2-1 thanks to a clinical late brace from Darwin Nunez.

In the circumstances, you’d expect both teams to approach this game on the front foot as they look to atone for last weekend’s antics.

We’ve become accustomed to goals at the AMEX with both teams scoring in each of Brighton’s last five matches there and 39 goals scored in their last 10.

Last season’s meetings between the sides saw Newcastle complete a league double for the first time, winning 4-1 at St James Park and 2-1 on their travels.

While there’s no doubting the threat these sides pose, it’s hard to back them until they’ve ironed out their defensive issues, and Newcastle will be considerably weaker without Botman.

For that reason, we’re expecting another high-scoring game. Betting on goals and both teams finding the net look like good angles.
