Wolves vs Liverpool 16/09/2023 – Verdict
Wolves’ 1-0 victory over Everton demonstrates their fighting spirit, but it may also be a reflection of their opponent’s performance on that day. Despite losing 3-2 to Crystal Palace, they were in the game for the whole 90 minutes.
Liverpool have recorded three wins and a draw so far this season, producing a stunning turnaround to beat Newcastle 2-1 with 10 men at St James’ Park.
They then defeated Aston Villa convincingly, despite having to play without Van Dijk, as Matip and Gomez formed a solid defensive partnership.
It is undeniable that Wolves deserved to win against Manchester United on the opening weekend of the season, and even their 4-1 home loss to Brighton provides some optimism.
Despite the result, Wolves managed 46% possession and 16 shots while producing an expected goals value of 2.14, a number only marginally worse than Brighton’s 2.22.
But Wanderers were unable to finish off their opponents. However, they have been in all four of their matches and the only thing separating them from Liverpool’s points tally is a clinical goalscorer.
This will be a much tougher game, and chances will be few and far between for the home side. We expect them to start quickly, but Jurgen Klopp’s men should be able to handle it.
The visiting team has won three of their last four visits by a score of 1-0, and four of five meetings by a one-goal margin. It is not common for both teams to score in these games, and the visitors know that two goals should be enough to win.
Liverpool will set out to be patient, keep possession, and limit Wolves’ chances. It seems inevitable that they’ll have too much quality, and we expect them to win this game.
