Selections

The Los Angeles Lakers host the Houston Rockets in Game 5 of their Western Conference first-round playoff series on April 29th at the Crypto.com Arena, with tip-off set for 22:00 EST.

Houston heads into this one fighting to keep their season alive, while the Lakers have the chance to close things out in front of their home crowd.

Houston Rockets @ Los Angeles Lakers: NBA preview

With the series sitting at 3-1, the pressure is firmly on the Rockets. But Game 4 has definitely shifted a few narratives.

Houston were the better team for long stretches, playing with far more energy and purpose. It was the first time in the series where their young core really looked settled, particularly on the offensive end.

From a Lakers perspective, it isn’t necessarily a must-win, but you really wouldn’t want to go back to Houston for a feisty game six with an ageing squad.

Los Angeles Lakers team news and form

Austin Reaves is listed as questionable, but there’s optimism he could return after an oblique injury.

If he does, it gives JJ Redick another ball-handler and a bit more structure offensively – something they’ve missed at times without Luka Doncic.

Outside of that, the Lakers have a clean injury bill and are at full strength.

Game 4 wasn’t their best, though. LeBron James never really got going, and as a team, they looked slightly off the pace.

Back at home, with the chance to finish the series, you’d expect a much stronger showing.

Houston Rockets team news and form

Houston is still expected to be without Kevin Durant, which continues to limit them late in games.

He was brought in to be that go-to option in big moments, and without him, they’ve had to rely more on collective scoring.

That being said, Amen Thompson has really stepped up in the back end of this series.

He’s gone for 20+ in his last two and looks increasingly confident attacking the rim. That’s been a real problem for the Lakers, especially defensively on the perimeter.

The shooting from deep still isn’t great, but when Houston defends with intensity – as they did in Game 4 – they give themselves a chance.

Key matchups and tactical battles to watch

Amen Thompson against the Lakers’ perimeter defence feels like the obvious one.

If he’s able to keep getting downhill and target the Laker guards in transition, he could have another big night scoring-wise.

There’s also the overall tempo of the game. Both matchups in Houston cleared the 208.5 points line set for this game, and with confidence growing on both sides, including the return of Reaves, another high-scoring game wouldn’t be a surprise.

Who will win the NBA clash in Los Angeles?

It’s still a 3-1 series, and the Lakers have been the more reliable team overall.

But Houston showed in Game 4 that they’re not done yet. They played with urgency, moved the ball better, and looked far more confident.

There are still a few unknowns for the Lakers, particularly how Reaves fits back in if he plays, and whether that disrupts any rhythm.

With their season on the line, Houston have a real shot at extending this, and I think they have a slight edge.

Regardless, it should be a close game, and the +4.5 spread for the Rockets is too good to ignore.
