Feyenoord vs Celtic 19/09/2023 – Verdict
Feyenoord have regained their form in the Eredivisie after two consecutive slip-ups against Fortuna Sittard and Sparta Rotterdam.
Arne Slot’s team have blitzed their recent opposition, outsourcing Almere City, Utrecht and Herenveen by a combined score of 18 goals to three.
Celtic have not been as impressive as they would have liked despite being top of the Scottish Premier League with 13 points after five games.
The Hoops were beaten 1-0 by Kilmarnock in the League Cup and followed that up with another blank in a 0-0 draw against Dundee.
Last season, they were soundly beaten by Real Madrid and RB Leipzig in the Champions League group stage, with their only points coming from 1-1 draws with Shakhtar Donetsk.
Feyenoord have not competed in the Champions League since 2017 and appeared to be out of their depth, but the class of 2023 look like a dangerous proposition for any side.
Rangers’ heavy defeat to PSV Eindhoven is likely a fair reflection of the increasing disparity in quality between the Dutch and Scottish leagues.
Celtic may be a better team than most that have visited De Kuip, but they have struggled away from home in Europe and Feyenoord have shown their ability to control games at this level.
Last year’s Europa League saw them beat Shakhtar Donetsk 7-1, Sturm Graz 6-0, Lazio 1-0 and Roma 1-0 at home, limiting those opponents to a combined two big chances.
Feyenoord are so well drilled under Slot and their tendency to edge games of the finest margins should mean they find a way past the Scottish champions on Tuesday.
